The future is
By Design.
Exploring the systems we inherit, the choices we make, and the futures we intentionally create.
Systems shape places. People create futures.
Overtown’s history shows how communities can be shaped by choices and how resilience, investment, creativity, and collective action can shape what comes next.
By Design
Systems shape places. People create futures. In 2027, TEDxOvertown explores the systems we inherit, the choices we make, and the futures we intentionally create.
The systems around us were designed. The future can be, too.
As TEDxOvertown enters its next chapter, By Design explores the systems we inherit, the choices we make, and the futures we intentionally create.
For Overtown, those words carry particular meaning. Segregation was by design. Redlining was by design. Highways that divided the community were by design. Those decisions shaped where people could live, build businesses, gather, and thrive and their effects are still visible today.
But Overtown’s resilience was also built with intention. Its culture, entrepreneurship, faith, creativity, and community have endured because generations of people chose to protect what mattered and imagine something better.
By Design asks us to look closely at the structures shaping our lives and consider what becomes possible when equity, purpose, and people guide what we build next.
